Dog Days

A few thoughts from a relatively new dog owner. With all of two and a half months of dog parenting under my belt, I figured I’d throw together a short list of observations:

1 – Pockets of Kibble: I’ve found I seem to have a little kibble or a few liver snacks in the pockets of every coat and pair of pants I own. Around the house this is actually kind of nice, as I can readily award Jäger for good behavior. At school, however, the doggy treats have not been quite as handy. Oh… and in case you were wondering, kibble doesn’t hold up well in the laundry.

2 – Crowded Bed: At first we crated Jäger every night. We actually had little choice; he had a taste for power cords and wasn’t very discriminating in when and where he relieved himself. He’s a quick learner though and it didn’t take him long to finagle a spot at the foot of our bed every night. He’s had little trouble wrapping us around his little paw, but in this case it’s worked out alright; he keeps our toes warm and loves to sleep in, just like my wife.

3 – Spontaneity Killer: No more road trips on the flip of a dime. Even planned trips present a bit of a problem these days unless we’re bringing Jäger along. In fact, we can’t even hit dinner after school and work without skedaddling home first. We feel bad making Jäger hold his bladder for more than 8 hours, which is a good thing because he can’t seem to hold it for more than 6.

4 – Michael Moore Lover: Yup. That’s right. Our boy loves the mighty Michael Moore. My in-laws gave Jäger a Michael Moore chew toy for Christmas and it’s become far and away his favorite thing to chew on. In fact, he’s gnawing on it right now.

Dogs are so fun. Alison gets pissed at me for talking about Rusty too much but he just rules. How do you know your dog loves MM? He might love inflicting pain on him?

I don't get pissed. (oh and deal with the fetus picture, I think it's awesome) I just don't know if everyone around you cares to hear every detail about Rusty. But I love to hear it because dogs are funny little creatures. They truly are a mans best friend.

I've enjoyed all the Rusty stories I've heard... but maybe I only get the good ones.

As for the picture, I still say it's eerie.

Let's just say it's made me reevaluate my position on abortion.

I hate the fake word skedaddle Marc.

Marc said...

Define "fake word"... because it shows up as a real one (not slang) in all the dictionaries I've checked (e.g., Merriam-Webster and Dictionary.Com).

Come to think of it you might be right BA... Maybe he's like Sean. He hates Michael Moore, but he just can't leave him alone.

Sorry I should have mentioned that it was not a word any straight male should ever use.

Do you want to break the news to Melbo or should I?

I haven't heard enough about Rusty lately. But I do love dog stories, ever since we got our boy I'm obsessed with every dog I see.
Ali, the fetus pic would be cool if it was actually a live feed from your uterus. I'm assuming it's not, in which case I'll respect your wishes and stay silent.
Marc, I love your sly way of promoting my site. You can go ahead and skedaddle your way into heart my for that one.

So, Rusty did the darnedst thing yesterday. He rammed the fence so hard that he knocked one of the boards off. He was trying to get out and my neighbor had to put her garbage can up against the fence so he couldn't get through. Then when Ali got home and let him in he tracked mud all through the house which led to an emotional break-down. But the best part was when Ali was yelling at him he just kept jumping around and plyaing with her, so naturally she couldn't stay mad at him. So all is well.

Well, emotional break downs are not very rare at this point in time, but yes I was very upset. Our carpet is completely ruined because of Rusty. But I can't totally blame Rusty, so I'll blame it on the rain. I am so sick of the rain that I could cry (oh, wait I did, yesterday). Muddy backyard and playful dog equal big mess and ruined clothes.

Marc, I was only going to comment on one thing on this post (since I don't have a dog and have no real opinions on dogs chewing MM), but TFB already beat me to it. Only elementary school teachers can get away with using "skedaddle".

Male elementary school teachers are gay?!! Does Joe Felt's wife know???
