Conservative Rock

Ever found yourself grooving to "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Stones or "Who'll Stop the Rain" by Creedence? Or maybe you just can't help singing along to "Winds of Change" by the Scorpions, "Date Rape" by Sublime, or "Father and Son" by Cat Stevens? How about "Don't Tread on Me" by Metallica, "Stay Together for the Kids" by Blink 182, or "Brick" by Ben Folds? If you answered yes to any of these, then you just might (unwittingly) be a Conservative Rock 'n' Roll fan.

A couple of weeks ago the National Review put together a list of "The 50 Greatest Conservative Rock Songs." It made waves (even garnering personal responses from some of the artists) and was quickly followed up with an encore, 50 More Conservative Rock Songs."

Apparently not content with controlling both houses of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court, and cable news, Conservatives have now decided to stake their claim on Rock 'n' Roll. They've targeted songs from bands across the musical spectrum, including Led Zeppelin, Prince, Rush (six times), U2, the Clash, Aerosmith, Kid Rock, Iron Maiden (three times), the Beach Boys, and Slayer.

While I'm still not clear on how things like family, personal responsibility, religion and patriotism have become exclusively "Conservative" values (nor am I sure that all of the songs he pegs really represent these "Conservative" values), the lists are still an entertaining read regardless of your political stripe (though for very different reasons depending on your political stripe). You can click on the article links below to see the rationale for each song's inclusion if you're interested (or bewildered):

Conservative racist bastards. While I didn't read through them all, nor do I intend to, there was only 1 African American represented out of 100? I guess Hendrix was a bit toward the left... and not all that great?

Marc said...

You gotta' give the some credit... they do have Chuck Berry on there (twice)

woo said...

That was the only 1 that I had mentioned. Thanks for spotting it though.

Yet another reason to hate Rush.

I guess Rush just rocks too awesome for some people.

Marc said...

Woo - So what Hendrix song are you implying they should have included?

Sammy Pow said...

Thanks for the link Marc, very interesting article. I'm a total conservative rock fan... I liked most of those songs. I loved the typical idiotic liberal responses that the the author got.

I think Sue Ellen needs a little spelling help with her comments, his name is Bush, not Rush! Jeez, although it's good if you hate Rush Limbaugh, but in order to be friends on this particular blog, you must say "I hate BUSH" first.

Just helping you out! Us liberals need to stick together so we look smarter ;)

1) Sorry my good Woo... You're not getting me to research every band on the list.

2) Sue Ellen - Having had several friends whose worlds revolved around Rush, your comment had me laughing heartily.

3) Garg - You're a god. I blog in part so I can hear you respond.

4) BA - Forgive me if I'm suspicious of your claims because:
(a) you're calling the kettle black you typical idiot liberal you
(b) you like a whole lot more "liberal rock" than "conservative rock" (if only because there is so much more out there... the National Review had to start scraping the bottom of the barrel to get its 101)

5) Anonymous -
(a) I think you are the first to ever say "I hate Bush" on this site.
(b) Everyone's welcome on this blog regardless of their feelings toward Bush.
(c) You're almost as big a coward as Rambo for posting anonymously.

That was an entertaining list...I'm guessing they are all on high-rotation on Bush's iPod ;)

I never knew I was being brainwashed this whole time. Is there anything I can do to be less controlled by the Bush party? I've been listening to Air America, Annie DeFranco and the Dixi Chicks, but I probably could be doing more.

Marc said...

Neil Young's new album might be another good place to start. Just be careful though... according to the list one of his older songs was conservative.

s.lloyd said...

I'm just so glad that we have THIS place to come and gain shelter from the storm of BULL SHI* (George puts the BS in Bush!) that this CORRUPT administration is spewing! I didn't have the $ to buy the new Dixi Dicks album because I've had to spend it all on Gas for my car, but as soon as I get some, you know what i'm buying.

Alright, alright... So ya'll are laying it on pretty thick, but I honestly don't really see how my post bashes conservatives or these even these songs for that matter. I posted the lists because I thought they were interesting. I may have raised the question of how all of these songs are conservative, but that's hardly bashing. In this case it's a legitimate question. For instance, see the explanation for Date Rape's inclusion... the author totally misattributes a line in order to construe it as conservative. Perhaps his rationale would work if the line were referencing the victim. BUT it's actually in reference to the rapist so the song's inclusion makes no sense.

fyi- I was just shooting from the gut there, it wasn't in response to your blog and/or posts, just words that needed to be written.

s.lloyd said...

Yea, sorry to pull a President Bush on you, I didn't write my comments in response to any particular blog entry of yours. Just because my conscience won't allow me not to support our country's hatred for him! I just want to support you in the cause!!!! I think we can all agree on that, can't we?

I haven't heard of most of those songs, so that either makes me a liberal or the guy who put that list together is super old. Probably both.

A few more additions to the list:

"It Wasn't Me" - Shaggy
"Smooth Criminal" - Micheal Jackson
"I Just Can't Wait to be King" - Simba and his buddies

Lizzy said...

Maybe all of these bands are conspiring to get us Americans to kill the prime minister of Malaysia!

Marc said...

Yup... he's old and you're liberal.

I'm really interested in hearing the rationale behind each of the choice songs you suggested should be included.

Marc said...

Yes Lizzy... it's the Manchurian Candidate all over again. Only this time the National Review is behind it, not Angela Lansbury.

Lizzy said...

Manchurian Candidate? I was thinking more along the lines of Zoolander... Same dog, different leg, right?

(I hate when people say that.)

melbo said...

Are they really that vague? Okay. Shaggy refers to the scandalous Delay/Abramhoff/and whoever elses caught with their pants down whereas MJ refers to guys like the Rover who handles scandle like hes done it before. Simba refers to the Ann Coulters who claw and climb their way up: the fiesty cats who have to be on top.

Marc said...

They were vague... but once you explain it like that it all comes together.

syd said...

Melbo, those songs werent on the list, cause they don't rock your face off. They might make you want to grind the sweet ass of some chick at a club or do some break dancing, but they won't melt your face into dripping goo due to decible count.
